Italy weighs security crackdown after Milan unrest led to 250 detentions

What's next: Local media reported measures could target minors and group gatherings after violence spread to Bologna and Turin.

Italy moved toward tighter security measures after two days of violent unrest in Milan tied to cost-of-living protests left more than 250 people detained, most of them minors, according to police cited by local media and the BBC. Officers used tear gas and water cannons after masked youths threw stones, bottles and other objects near Piazza del Duomo, while stores were looted and property damaged. Similar disorder was reported in Bologna and Turin. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni chaired an emergency security meeting as Corriere della Sera reported possible steps including broader preventive detention for minors and limits on group gatherings. Police said 32 people were arrested on Sunday.
