Israeli strikes hit Syrian airbase 8 times after Turkish visit

What's new: A US envoy called the attack an unnecessary escalation as Syria said the runway was damaged but no one was hurt.

Israeli airstrikes hit Syria's disused Abu Duhur airbase in Idlib province early Aug. 18, damaging the runway and other infrastructure, Syrian state media reported. A military source cited by state TV said the base was struck eight times and that no casualties were recorded. US envoy for Syria Tom Barrack, writing on X, described the strikes as confirmed and called them an unnecessary escalation. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attack followed a recent inspection of the site by a Turkish military delegation as Damascus worked to reactivate the facility. Syria condemned the strike as a violation of its sovereignty.
