Israel hit Syrian air base to block possible Turkish troop deployment

What's new: The U.S. is pushing a deconfliction mechanism among Israel, Turkey and Syria after the strike drew regional condemnation.

Israel struck Syria's Abu Duhur air base in Idlib early Tuesday, damaging the runway in eight hits and saying it acted to stop a possible Turkish troop deployment there. Syrian state media reported no casualties. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said Syria was close to violating a security status quo with Israel by allowing Turkish forces onto the base. Turkey rejected that claim as baseless and accused Israel of violating Syria's sovereignty. The attack sharpened tensions between Israel and Turkey, both active in Syria and already at odds over Gaza. U.S. envoy Tom Barrack called the strike an unnecessary escalation and said Washington is working on a deconfliction mechanism and already facilitates information-sharing among the three sides.
