Iran pushes back as US prepares toughest sanctions package yet

What's next: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said details are due Monday as Washington weighs pressure that could also hit countries trading with Tehran.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammed Baqer Qalibaf urged Tehran to find ways around what he called unjust US sanctions, a day after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington was preparing its toughest package yet against Iran. Speaking in Baghdad, Qalibaf said Iran and Iraq should deepen economic ties and use their national currencies in trade to cut reliance on the US dollar. Bessent said the new measures would be detailed Monday and argued tougher economic pressure could reduce the need for renewed large-scale military action. The latest US threat follows President Donald Trump's warning of economic consequences for any country that provides Iran with a lifeline, raising the stakes for China, which buys most of Iran's shipped oil.
