Inul: Dangdut Becomes More Inclusive by Blending With Pop

Inul said mixes with hip-hop and disco are also helping dangdut gain more traction among Generation Z.

Dangdut singer Inul Daratista said the genre is becoming more inclusive for young listeners because it can easily evolve and be blended with other styles. Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday night, she said dangdut is no longer seen only as a traditional music form, but as a genre that can merge with pop, hip hop and disco. Inul said that flexibility is helping dangdut keep rising in popularity among Generation Z. She also pointed to a performance in Amsterdam, Netherlands, which she said showed dangdut has long reached stages abroad. Inul said she hopes dangdut remains a source of national pride and is enjoyed across social groups. She also said she is interested in performing in China, joking that she wants to meet actor Zhang Ling He.
