Gianni Infantino has abandoned a plan to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investors after a backlash spread across three confederations and into FIFA's own ranks. UEFA had already threatened to boycott FIFA competitions, while Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation also turned against the proposal. The Guardian reported that the three bodies together account for 143 of FIFA's 211 members. Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016, now faces mounting pressure over his leadership after the failed push. Carlos Cordeiro, a senior adviser to Infantino and a White House World Cup task force adviser, resigned and called the project "a bad deal for football."
