Indonesia steers EV incentives toward national car, motorcycle program

The government is preparing quotas for 100,000 electric cars and 100,000 electric motorcycles, with a proposed Rp5 million subsidy per bike.

The government is steering electric vehicle incentives toward a national car and motorcycle program while refining a scheme aimed at boosting sales and strengthening the domestic EV industry. Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto said the linkage is under discussion, but the final form and implementation schedule have not been decided. Earlier, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said this year’s incentives are targeted to cover 100,000 electric cars and 100,000 electric motorcycles each. For two-wheelers, the proposed subsidy is Rp5 million per unit, while the amount for electric cars has not been disclosed. Even as the talks continue, the EV market keeps expanding: Gaikindo data show BEV sales in the first quarter of 2026 reached 33,150 units, up 95.9 percent from a year earlier.
