Indonesia prepares 2027 commodities exchange for CPO, nickel, coal

OJK is due to issue rules by Sept. 17, with a phased transition plan to move trading to the new exchange.

The government is preparing a Mineral and Strategic Commodities Exchange that is targeted to begin operating on Jan. 1, 2027, to establish Indonesian reference prices for key export commodities. President Prabowo Subianto first included the plan in his budget speech for the 2027 state budget bill on Aug. 14. Commodities slated for the exchange include CPO, nickel and coal. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said the exchange is intended to ensure that prices for Indonesia's natural resource commodities no longer rely entirely on overseas markets. The Financial Services Authority will issue the exchange rules no later than Sept. 17, including a gradual transition scheme for trading. The government is also preparing a presidential decree to set the list of commodities to be traded.
