Indonesia secures US$216 million from Norway climate scheme
The funds are channeled through BPDLH for forest protection, ecosystem restoration and wildfire control.
The forestry partnership between Indonesia and Norway is described as creating a model of performance-based climate diplomacy, with payments made after independently verified emissions cuts. Under the Results-Based Payment scheme, Indonesia has received about US$216 million for reducing emissions from the forestry and land use sector. The funds are managed by Badan Pengelola Dana Lingkungan Hidup for forest protection, ecosystem rehabilitation, forest and land fire control, social forestry and community empowerment around forests. The cooperation began with a Letter of Intent in May 2010 in Oslo, ended in September 2021, then was replaced by a Memorandum of Understanding in September 2022. Indonesia's FOLU Net Sink 2030 program is one of the main pillars of the forestry sector emissions-cutting target.
