IDAI warns babies should not be fed raw eggs after Surabaya case

The group warned of salmonellosis, which can trigger diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration and severe complications in infants.

Ikatan Dokter Anak Indonesia warned that babies and children should not be given raw or undercooked eggs after a case surfaced in Surabaya, Jawa Timur, involving a 28-day-old baby who was reported to have died after allegedly being fed raw egg by a family member. Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, chairman of IDAI's central board, said raw eggs can carry Salmonella bacteria that may cause gastrointestinal infection. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, stomach pain, vomiting and dehydration, which can be more severe in babies and lead to serious complications. IDAI stressed that babies aged 0-6 months should receive exclusive breastfeeding without any additional food or drink. Eggs may be introduced later as MPASI, according to the baby's age and readiness, provided they are cooked until both the white and yolk are fully set.
