ICE plans $20 million purchase of shock gloves for officers

Why it matters: The gloves can deliver electric pain through skin contact, raising fresh oversight concerns in immigration enforcement.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement plans to spend up to $20 million on gloves that can deliver electric shocks to people during confrontations, according to a Department of Homeland Security notice published Monday. The devices, known as the G.L.O.V.E., are made by Kentucky-based Compliant Technologies and are meant to help officers gain compliance from combative individuals. The notice said DHS could publish a solicitation for a no-bid contract as early as Friday and aims to buy thousands of the devices by March. Civil rights advocates criticized the plan, arguing ICE already faces scrutiny over force and limited accountability as it carries out President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown.
