ICE agents shoot Bronx man in car with 5-year-old in back seat
What's new: DHS said the man drove into two ICE vehicles and toward officers; his lawyers said he still has a bullet in his body.
Federal immigration agents shot and wounded a man in the Bronx while his 5-year-old son sat in the back seat, setting off a dispute between New York City officials and the Department of Homeland Security over how the encounter unfolded. The shooting happened Thursday afternoon in Marble Hill. DHS said agents were trying to arrest Oscar Belgal, a Dominican man with a prior criminal record, when he rammed two ICE vehicles and accelerated toward officers, prompting gunfire. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said agents surrounded the car and opened fire, and said they wore masks and construction vests that made them hard to identify. The child was not physically hurt. Belgal was later taken to detention in Brooklyn, where lawyers said he still had a bullet lodged in his body.
