Hungary moves to remove president in Magyar power shake-up

What's next: Parliament was set to vote Monday, and an impeachment process could start if Tamas Sulyok refuses to sign within five days.

Hungary's parliament was set to approve a constitutional amendment Monday to end President Tamas Sulyok's term, a major step in Prime Minister Peter Magyar's push to dismantle the power structure left by former leader Viktor Orban. Magyar, whose Tisza party won a supermajority after defeating Orban in April, said the measure would pass and that impeachment proceedings would begin if Sulyok did not sign it within five days. The bill would let parliament elect a new president until a new constitution takes effect, or for up to five years. It also would cap lawmakers' terms at 12 years. Sulyok, a former Constitutional Court judge appointed president in 2024, has opposed the amendment and sought a review by the Venice Commission.
