Hungary elects ex-top judge Andras Baka president in 140-6 vote
What's next: Baka will oversee work on a new constitution as Viktor Orban's Fidesz boycotted the parliamentary vote.
Hungary's parliament elected former Supreme Court head Andras Baka as president on Tuesday, installing a veteran judge in the largely ceremonial post as Prime Minister Peter Magyar pushes to undo Viktor Orban's political system. Baka won by 140 votes to 6 after lawmakers from Orban's Fidesz party walked out in protest over the removal of former President Tamas Sulyok last month. In his oath speech, Baka said Hungary could not build a new future on revenge and pledged to represent citizens with differing views. The new president is expected to monitor Magyar's overhaul of state institutions and oversee debate on a replacement for Orban's 2011 constitution.
