House approves $70 billion for ICE and Border Patrol in 214-212 vote

What's next: The bill heads to President Donald Trump and would fund the agencies through the rest of his term with few new limits.

The House narrowly passed legislation Tuesday to send roughly $70 billion to immigration enforcement, giving Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Border Patrol funding through the remainder of President Donald Trump's term. The measure cleared the chamber 214-212 after Republicans used reconciliation to bypass Democratic demands for tighter oversight and changes to enforcement tactics. The package provides $38 billion for ICE, about $22 billion to $26 billion for the Border Patrol, and billions more for border technology and other costs. Democrats had pushed for requirements including visible agent identification, judicial warrants before entering private property and stronger detention oversight after two protesters were killed in Minneapolis earlier this year. Those conditions were left out.
