Haley Stevens backs Mike Rogers in Michigan Senate race

Why it matters: The break with her party came 2 days before the vote in a race that could help decide Senate control.

Michigan Rep. Haley Stevens, a Democrat who lost this year’s Senate primary, endorsed Republican nominee Mike Rogers on Sunday in a late shock to one of the country’s most closely watched races. The move came two days before Election Day as Rogers faces Democrat Abdul El-Sayed for the open seat being vacated by Sen. Gary Peters. Stevens had previously backed El-Sayed after the primary, but relations deteriorated over a political ad tied to Rebellion PAC and over El-Sayed’s ties to commentator Hasan Piker. El-Sayed said Stevens was not a focus for voters, while Democrats in Michigan rallied around his campaign. NPR reported Stevens’ chief of staff and other aides quit, and the state party chair said she was no longer a member.
