Gunmen kill at least 40 in Taraba village attack in Nigeria

What's new: Police initially recovered 10 bodies, but Amnesty International said more were found later as searches continued.

Gunmen killed at least 40 people in an attack on Binnari village in Nigeria's Taraba state, according to Amnesty International, after police first confirmed 10 deaths. Police said a large group of attackers stormed the village Friday afternoon, opened fire and looted food from shops before fleeing. The BBC reported that some homes were also set ablaze and that the raid lasted for hours after midday prayers. A community leader told AFP the assailants arrived on about 50 motorcycles. Police said officers responded to a distress call and continued searching nearby bush areas for more victims, warning the toll could rise. Northern Nigeria has seen repeated attacks by heavily armed bandit groups that raid villages, steal livestock and abduct residents for ransom.
