Gunmen kill 7, wound 34 at church funeral in Jordan’s Karak
What’s next: Jordanian security forces are hunting the attackers after King Abdullah II vowed harsh retaliation.
Gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in Hammoud in Jordan’s Karak governorate on Friday, killing seven people and injuring 34 in a rare mass shooting targeting a Christian gathering in the kingdom. Authorities said the attackers arrived by vehicle, entered the church compound and fled after the assault. Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya called the gunmen a group of extremists, while the public security directorate said a manhunt was under way. State media footage and verified CCTV appeared to show three armed men approaching the church. Officials said 27 of the wounded were still being treated after the attack.
