Government to separate MBG budget from education by 2028
The two-year transition means APBN 2026 and 2027 need not be revised immediately, though education advocates want faster separation.
The government will separate funding for the free nutritious meal program, or MBG, from the education budget no later than the 2028 APBN, following a Constitutional Court ruling. At the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Friday (31/7), the government said the two-year transition means APBN 2026 and 2027 do not need to be overhauled immediately. The court ruled that education funds in the APBN may no longer be used to run MBG because the program is not a core component of education. The ruling also preserves the constitutional mandate that the education budget must remain at least 20 percent of the APBN. Several education advocates welcomed the ruling, but said the separation should happen sooner than the 2028 deadline.
