Google Maps relabels Lake Ontario as Lake America for US users
What's new: Canada still sees Lake Ontario, while users elsewhere get both names under Google's country-based maps policy.
Google Maps now shows Lake Ontario as "Lake America" for users in the United States after President Donald Trump signed an executive order changing the federal US name for the lake. The update follows a worsening US-Canada trade fight that has already triggered billions of dollars in tariffs on each side. Google said it applies names from the US Geographic Names Information System and uses different labels when countries recognize different names for the same body of water. Canadian users will still see Lake Ontario, and users outside both countries will see both names. Trump signed the order Thursday, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford pushed back, insisting the lake's name remains Lake Ontario.
