Georgia GOP leaders block Kemp push for 2028 redistricting

Why it matters: The move preserves current maps for now after a Supreme Court ruling weakened protections for minority voters.

Georgia's top Republican lawmakers shut down Gov. Brian Kemp's push to redraw congressional and legislative districts during a special session Wednesday, halting an effort that could have reshaped maps ahead of the 2028 election. House Speaker Jon Burns told Kemp lawmakers would not take up redistricting, citing unresolved litigation over Georgia's current districts and uncertainty after the U.S. Supreme Court's Louisiana v. Callais ruling. Civil rights groups, Democrats and Black lawmakers had pressed hard against the plan, arguing it would reduce the political power of Black and other nonwhite voters. Burns said lawmakers should focus instead on economic issues rather than a rushed partisan fight.
