M5.8 quake shakes Pandeglang, BMKG: no tsunami threat

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake shook the Pandeglang, Banten area on Saturday early morning, 22 August 2026, at 00.41 WIB. The Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika said the quake had no tsunami potential. Its epicenter was offshore, about 182 kilometers southwest of Sumur, Pandeglang, at coordinates 7,73 LS and 104,33 BT and at a depth of 10 kilometers. BMKG said the quake was a shallow one triggered by subduction activity, with a thrust fault mechanism. Shaking was felt at intensity III to IV MMI in Cimanggu, Sumur, and Cibitung. By 01.00 WIB, BMKG had not recorded any aftershocks.
