M5.4 quake jolts Buol, BPBD tallies damage to hospital, office

BMKG said the shallow quake was triggered by subduction activity and posed no tsunami threat.

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake shook Buol Regency, Central Sulawesi, on Sunday night, prompting BPBD to assess damage to several buildings. Preliminary data showed impacts on the Mal Pelayanan Publik, part of the patient wards at RSUD Buol, the Inspectorate Office, and homes in Kali village. BPBD Buol chief Moh Kachfi asked village and district officials to speed up damage reports while reminding residents to stay alert for possible aftershocks. BMKG said the quake struck offshore about 37 kilometers northeast of Buol at a depth of 37 kilometers. According to BMKG Director of Earthquake and Tsunami Wijayanto, it was a shallow tectonic quake caused by subduction activity, and modeling showed no potential for a tsunami.
