G7 summit opens in France with Iran, Ukraine in focus

New disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and prospects for peace talks are shaping the agenda on energy, sanctions and European security.

The G7 summit opened in Evian-les-Bains, France, on 15-17 June 2026, with the wars in Iran and Ukraine as the main agenda items. Leaders from Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain, the United States and host France are weighing the geopolitical and economic fallout from the two conflicts. The war in Iran jolted markets after the Strait of Hormuz was blocked, disrupting a route for about 20 percent of the world’s oil supply as well as gas and fertilizer shipments. The next day, the forum will turn to Ukraine when President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to arrive in Evian. On the sidelines of the opening, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said easing sanctions on Iran could only be considered if there is a real change on the ground.
