Fox reports 2016 Omar marriage-fraud probe began under Obama
What's new: The report says the inquiry was later closed in 2021 and links it to a separate new federal probe into Omar's citizenship history.
A federal investigation into whether Rep. Ilhan Omar entered a fraudulent 2009 marriage began in 2016 during Barack Obama's administration, Fox News reported, citing prior reporting and a source familiar with the matter. The outlet said the FBI and Department of Homeland Security examined whether Omar's marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was tied to immigration fraud and found some evidence before the case ended, in part because the possible felony was outside the statute of limitations. Fox also reported that a U.S. attorney in Minnesota closed the matter in 2021. The issue has resurfaced alongside a separate federal inquiry focused on Omar's citizenship application and family records.
