Fire destroys more than 100 homes near Oslo, forces evacuations

What's new: Hundreds fled the Drammen-area blaze, which spread into nearby forest as strong winds and dry weather fueled it.

A fast-moving fire destroyed more than 100 homes near Drammen in southern Norway on Friday, sending thick black smoke over the area and forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate. The blaze hit a neighborhood of terraced housing about 30 miles west of Oslo and spread into nearby forest, while more than 60 firefighters and helicopters worked to contain it. Police said the fire was still not under control, but no deaths, injuries or missing people were reported. The cause was not immediately known. A Drammen Red Cross worker told Reuters that recent heat and very dry conditions helped the fire spread quickly.
