Fifa fires COO Kevin Lamour after World Cup sale clash

What's next: The dismissal deepens pressure on Gianni Infantino ahead of his 2027 re-election bid.

Fifa ended chief operating officer Kevin Lamour’s tenure on Aug. 17, weeks after he publicly opposed Gianni Infantino’s plan to sell stakes in World Cup-related competitions to private investors. Lamour had called the proposal “the project of one person” and said Fifa’s administration had been “deceived.” The governing body dropped the plan on Aug. 1, a day after his criticism and the resignation of senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro. Lamour joined Fifa less than two years ago from Uefa, where he had served as deputy secretary general. His removal drew fresh criticism from European football figures, who said it weakened Fifa’s administration and sent a chilling message to officials pushing for governance changes.
