Ferry sinks in Zimbabwe's Lake Kariba, killing 72

Searches for other passengers continue as police say the vessel was believed to be carrying more people than allowed.

At least 72 people were killed after the RIDA ferry sank on Lake Kariba, on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, on Saturday local time. Zimbabwe police said the death toll rose after rescue teams recovered more bodies overnight, while identification of the victims is still under way. The public transport vessel reportedly was hit by large waves before it went under. Authorities suspect the ferry was carrying more passengers than its capacity. Some early reports said the boat was carrying 95 people, but local officials later said there were 114 adult passengers, five crew members and an unspecified number of children. Most of the passengers were said to be villagers and fish traders from communities around the lake. Search operations for those still missing are continuing.
