FDA flags 19 million recalled eggs as highest-risk salmonella threat

The US Food and Drug Administration classified a July 22 egg recall as Class 1, its most serious level, warning that exposure could cause severe illness or death. Midwest Poultry Services pulled about 19 million eggs over possible salmonella enteritidis contamination after finding problems at two Texas farm locations through environmental monitoring and an internal investigation. The recall covers 1,589,577 dozen white shell eggs and brown cage-free shell eggs produced in Texas from June 6 to July 3, with sell-by or best-by dates from July 20 to Aug. 17. The eggs were distributed in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Mississippi. The company said it was not aware of any illnesses and urged consumers to throw the eggs away or return them for a refund.
