Fauci faces Senate hearing after Rand Paul posts 1,100-page diary

What's new: The testimony comes after Paul subpoenaed Fauci and released pandemic-era notes that Fauci allies say add no new evidence.

Anthony Fauci is set to testify before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Wednesday after Chair Rand Paul released more than 1,100 pages of Fauci's diary entries from December 2019 to December 2022. Paul argues the notes conflict with Fauci's public account of the pandemic and plans to press him on the origins of COVID-19, especially whether U.S.-funded research in China played any role. Fauci, the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director, has called the allegations baseless. Reports ahead of the hearing said the diary material does not appear to reveal new scientific evidence about whether the virus emerged through a lab leak or natural spillover.
