Ex-Wisconsin judge fined $5,000, avoids prison in ICE arrest case

What's next: Hannah Dugan plans to appeal her obstruction conviction after prosecutors argued she should get 15 to 21 months.

Former Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan was sentenced to no prison time and fined $5,000 after a jury found she obstructed a planned immigration arrest outside her courtroom in Wisconsin. U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman said prison was unnecessary, citing Dugan's public service, even as federal prosecutors argued sentencing guidelines called for 15 to 21 months behind bars. Dugan was convicted in December of obstructing a federal proceeding but acquitted of concealing a person from arrest. Prosecutors said she directed Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a Mexican migrant facing misdemeanor assault or battery charges, through a nonpublic jury door to avoid agents waiting in the hallway. He was later arrested outside the courthouse after a brief chase and was eventually deported.
