Everest guide survives 6 days stranded after oxygen ran out
What's new: Dawa Sherpa said he lived on ice and chocolates, escaped a crevasse and was flown to a Kathmandu hospital.
Dawa Sherpa, a 57-year-old Nepali mountain guide, survived six days stranded on Mount Everest after his oxygen ran out during his descent from the summit. He was last seen above Camp 3 at about 7,500 meters before a cleanup team found him crawling down toward Base Camp on Thursday. Sherpa told the BBC he endured the ordeal by chewing ice and eating chocolates he found in his pocket. He said he later fell into a crevasse and remained trapped for about two and a half days until snow from an avalanche helped him climb out. He was airlifted to a hospital in Kathmandu for treatment for dehydration, frostbite and a fractured bone.
