Drone strike on Abyei market kills 153, sparks protests
About 8.000 residents fled, South Sudan summoned Sudan's ambassador, and fears grew that fighting could spread to the border.
A drone strike hit Amiet Market in Abyei, the oil-rich area disputed by Sudan and South Sudan, killing at least 153 people. Abyei authorities said the Monday attack also sparked a major fire at a fuel depot, damaged nearby buildings, and hindered the recovery of bodies. Abyei Information Minister Yohana Akol Ngor said the death toll could still rise. Diplomatic sources, aid workers and conflict experts quoted by Reuters said the depot had previously been used by RSF for supplies. A military source told BBC that the Sudan army carried out the attack. MSF treated more than 20 wounded people at Ameth Bek Hospital. South Sudan then summoned Sudan's ambassador to deliver an official protest.
