DPR Backs Tighter Naturalization Rules to Protect Assets

Menkum found some naturalization requests were filed without immediate family, raising concern they sought land ownership rights.

Komisi XIII DPR supports the government’s move to tighten naturalization for foreign nationals becoming Indonesian citizens to prevent abuse of citizenship status to gain control of assets in Indonesia. Chairman of Komisi XIII DPR Willy Aditya said citizenship should not be granted solely for practical reasons such as becoming an athlete, investing, marrying, or securing property. He called for clear and comprehensive rules and stressed the need for cultural integration, social values, and Pancasila. Earlier, Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas said there were signs that naturalization applicants who had already been working in Indonesia were filing requests only in their own names, without immediate family members. The government fears that pattern could be used to obtain ownership rights to land and property.
