DOJ probes William & Mary scholarships for possible race bias

What’s next: The Virginia college has until Sept. 8 to turn over records, and a violation finding could threaten federal aid.

The Justice Department opened a civil rights investigation into the College of William & Mary over whether scholarships and other student benefits use unlawful race-based criteria. The probe covers programs across the Williamsburg, Virginia, campus, including the law school and school of education. In letters reviewed by Bloomberg and described by Fox News, the department pointed to aid programs that give preference to “diverse people and perspectives,” a fellowship for Hispanic or Latino women, a scholars program for students from underrepresented backgrounds, and law scholarships for graduates of historically Black colleges and universities. William & Mary said it is committed to equitable learning environments and to complying with state and federal law. The school has until Sept. 8 to provide requested materials.
