Court blocks Trump’s $1.8 billion fund as GOP pressure builds
What’s next: payments are halted until at least June 12, while Trump weighs whether to scrap the program altogether.
The Trump administration paused a nearly $1.8 billion compensation fund for Trump allies after a federal judge in Virginia blocked payouts pending further arguments later this month. The Justice Department said it would comply with the order, which freezes the so-called Anti-Weaponization Fund for at least two weeks. The program grew out of Trump’s settlement with the Internal Revenue Service over the leak of his tax returns. It drew fierce resistance from congressional Republicans, who objected to weak oversight and the possibility that Jan. 6 defendants could receive money. AP also reported Trump is reconsidering whether to keep the fund as Senate Republicans press the White House to abandon it.
