Delhi braces for 2nd day of protests over India voter roll purge

What's new: A court ordered the release of CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke as police kept thousands of security personnel across New Delhi.

New Delhi prepared for a second day of protests Sunday over voter list revisions that critics say favor Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party. A court ordered the release of Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke and two other senior leaders after they were detained when their plane landed in Delhi on Saturday. Activist Dhruv Rathee was also released after midnight on condition he stay out of further protests. Police had detained more than 2,000 people and sealed off central Delhi to block a mass rally at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Metro stations reopened and mobile internet service returned Sunday, but thousands of police and paramilitary personnel remained deployed.
