Cyclospora outbreak tops 1,644 cases as U.S. links source to lettuce

A multistate cyclospora outbreak has sickened more than 1,644 people and hospitalized 94 in the U.S., with illnesses first reported May 13, federal health officials said. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said investigators had identified the source and that recalls were underway. The FDA has tied the outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce from central Mexico supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico and served at some Taco Bell restaurants. Taylor Farms recalled the implicated lettuce, and Taco Bell removed it from stores. But the FDA said a previously reported positive test in a Taylor Farms lettuce sample was a false positive and that the investigation is continuing.
