Cyclospora outbreak tied to lettuce spreads to 9 US states

A multistate cyclospora outbreak linked to shredded iceberg lettuce from central Mexico has expanded to nine states, with Michigan the hardest hit. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration said Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania were newly linked, joining Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia and Michigan. Federal officials have tied 1,947 illnesses among people who reported Taco Bell exposure to the outbreak, and the FDA said at least 98 people have been hospitalized. Taylor Farms recalled iceberg lettuce sourced from its Guanajuato facility on July 17, and Taco Bell removed the affected product. Mexican health authorities said facility samples tested negative, while US investigators continue tracing the source.
