CrowdStrike finds China drove 58% of state-backed tech hacks
Why it matters: The report tied the espionage to a race for AI and said North Korean operatives also sought remote tech jobs to fund Pyongyang.
CrowdStrike said China-linked groups posed the biggest espionage threat to technology companies over the past year, accounting for more than 58% of state-sponsored targeted cyberattacks on the sector. The cybersecurity firm said the campaigns focused on AI capabilities, intellectual property and other high-value data at companies involved in hardware, software, semiconductors and IT services. Its review covered the 12 months through March 31, 2026. CrowdStrike also said North Korean operatives tried to use fake identities to land remote IT jobs across North America, Europe and Asia, generating revenue for Pyongyang while gaining access inside companies. The Chinese Embassy in Washington rejected the findings.
