Congo Ebola outbreak tops 9,100 cases and 4,400 deaths

Why it matters: The Bundibugyo strain has no approved vaccine or treatment, and spillover cases have already reached Uganda and Kenya.

Congo's Ebola outbreak has climbed past 9,100 confirmed cases, with more than 4,400 deaths, as authorities struggle to contain transmission across seven provinces. Congo's National Institute of Public Health reported 9,144 cases and 4,410 deaths after 79 new cases were logged in 24 hours, while an earlier government update put the toll at 9,066 cases and 4,381 deaths. Health workers say many infections and deaths are occurring outside treatment centers, and officials warn community transmission remains a threat in 65 affected health zones. The outbreak, driven by the rare Bundibugyo virus, began in April and has been worsened by fighting, population displacement, mistrust of health care and shortages of supplies. Aid groups also report indirect damage, including fewer hospital births and routine childhood vaccinations.
