China tightens drone exports to U.S. amid trade war

Shipments of drones, key components and related technology to the U.S. now face case-by-case checks and lose streamlined permits.

China began tightening export controls on drones and related dual-use items to the United States, effective Wednesday, citing national security and nonproliferation obligations. China’s Ministry of Commerce said each export of drones, key components and related technology on the control list to the U.S. will undergo strict review. The items will also no longer receive streamlined export licensing. The move from Beijing comes after the U.S. hardened restrictions on Chinese technology products. The FCC previously gave initial approval to a proposal to ban imports of certain military-standard drones made abroad, a step widely seen as targeting Chinese manufacturers. Beijing also halted post-certification follow-up inspections by U.S. certification bodies and imposed retaliatory measures on six American entities.
