China holds Zhu Rongji funeral under tight security in Beijing

What's new: online tributes were censored as nostalgia for Zhu's reform era risked spilling into criticism of Xi's rule.

China lowered flags to half-staff and cremated former Premier Zhu Rongji in Beijing on Tuesday, with security tightened along the route to Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery and around Tiananmen Square. President Xi Jinping and the six other Politburo Standing Committee members attended the ceremony and bowed three times, while former President Hu Jintao sent a wreath. Zhu, who served as premier from 1998 to 2003, was widely remembered for pushing 1990s market reforms, curbing inflation and restructuring state firms at the cost of millions of jobs. State media praised him, but authorities kept the mourning low-key and scrubbed some online posts as tributes to his era stirred debate over China's current political course.
