ChatGPT gains iMessage controls on Mac, testing Apple privacy line

What's new: The feature can read, write and search messages, but users must grant Full Disk Access and other permissions to enable it.

OpenAI has added iMessage controls to ChatGPT on Mac, letting the chatbot read, draft, send and search text messages in Apple’s Messages app. The integration can also summarize conversations, expanding ChatGPT’s reach into one of Apple’s most sensitive data areas. OpenAI said the tool works only with user consent, runs locally on a Mac and does not build an index of all messages. To turn it on, users must approve several opt-in prompts, including Full Disk Access, contact access and automation permissions in macOS settings. The rollout adds pressure to Apple’s privacy positioning and could also challenge features planned for Siri AI. It comes weeks after Apple sued OpenAI, accusing it of taking information about upcoming products.
