CDC probes 18,000 possible cyclospora cases across 45 states

U.S. health officials are investigating a widening cyclospora outbreak that may have sickened more than 18,000 people across 45 states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 6,707 cases have been confirmed and about 11,500 more are under review, while 423 patients have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Michigan has recorded more than 10,000 cases, the highest state total, followed by Ohio, New York, North Carolina and Illinois. Cyclosporiasis is caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis and is typically linked to contaminated food or water, often raw produce. Officials have not identified the source and said case counts are likely to keep rising as more reports come in.
