Canada rolls out C$2 billion AI plan to build data centers, supercomputer

Canada has released a national artificial intelligence strategy that commits more than C$2 billion over the next decade to expand AI use, boost computing capacity and strengthen domestic control over critical technology. The plan includes a publicly accessible supercomputer for researchers and businesses, support for large-scale AI data centers serving Canadian clients, and programs to improve AI literacy. Ottawa also set aside C$500 million for investments in Canadian AI companies, including potential equity stakes. Prime Minister Mark Carney cast the strategy as part of a push to protect Canadian sovereignty and reduce dependence on foreign infrastructure, while the government also pledged fellowships, research chairs and faster immigration pathways to retain and attract AI talent.
