Canada rejects “American Lake” name for Lake Ontario
The dispute adds to trade tensions after talks failed, leaving a threatened 50 percent tariff on Canadian goods unresolved.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected President Donald Trump's decision to rename Lake Ontario as “American Lake.” Carney said Canadians will continue to call it Lake Ontario, “today and forever.” Ontario Premier Doug Ford took a similar position. Trump signed the executive order on Wednesday (27/8) amid a deadlock in trade relations between the two countries. Lake Ontario sits on the U.S.-Canada border; about 52 percent of its surface area is in Canada and the rest in New York state. The dispute emerged after the August 22 deadline to avoid a 50 percent trade tariff on about US$20 billion of Canadian goods passed without an agreement. Canada then retaliated with taxes on about 700 U.S. products worth roughly the same amount.
