Canada hits $20 billion in US goods with retaliatory tariffs

Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on nearly $20 billion worth of U.S. goods on Tuesday, deepening a trade fight after President Donald Trump put 50% duties on some Canadian imports. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said Canada will answer "dollar for dollar, rate for rate" with tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% across about 700 products effective Sept. 8. The measures cover steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, electronics and other goods. Ottawa also rolled out a C$7.5 billion support package for workers and businesses. Prime Minister Mark Carney had halted trade talks on Friday, calling late U.S. changes unfair and uneconomic.
