California voters narrow field in special primary for Swalwell seat

What's next: If no candidate wins a majority Tuesday, the top two advance to an Aug. 18 special election for the final 15 weeks of the term.

Bay Area voters on Tuesday cast ballots in a special primary to replace former U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell in California's 14th Congressional District. Nearly a dozen candidates are competing to fill the final 15 weeks of his term after Swalwell resigned in April following sexual-assault allegations he has denied. Democrats are favored in the heavily Democratic district, and a Democratic hold would further squeeze the already narrow Republican majority in the House. Among the Democrats running are Melissa Hernandez, Aisha Wahab and Rakhi Israni Singh. Republican contenders include Wendy Huang and Dena Maldonado. Unless one candidate clears 50% of the vote, the top two finishers, regardless of party, will move on to a special general election on Aug. 18.
