California judge blocks Trump visa crackdown on pro-Palestinian students

A federal judge in San Jose, California, ruled on Aug. 28 that the Trump administration unconstitutionally used immigration law to revoke visas and pursue deportations of non-citizen college students over pro-Palestinian advocacy and criticism of Israel. US District Judge Noel Wise faulted the State Department and Department of Homeland Security for targeting speech the government opposed. The case was brought by The Stanford Daily, which said some student-visa holders avoided covering campus protests and the Middle East conflict for fear of retaliation. Wise focused on two Immigration and Nationality Act provisions, including one that let Secretary of State Marco Rubio deem someone deportable on foreign policy grounds.
